1.) E-Z Money - The BIG Story
U.S. stocks are fresh off their best week since 2020 as investors pile into the stock market believing that it will hold up better than Europe even with the Russia-Ukraine conflict ongoing. The S&P 500 recouped nearly half of its losses for the year after the Federal Reserve announced its first rate hike since 2018. Stock futures are steady on Sunday night but all eyes remain on Ukraine as President Zelensky warns of a possible World War III. The United Nations says 10 million Ukrainians have fled their homes.
2.) “To the Moon” — Retail Investing
Gas prices are so high that two states are temporarily suspending taxes to help consumers at the pump. Both Maryland and Georgia will waive the duties on gasoline but in reality it only saves drivers about .30¢ per gallon. Many are saying that the simple answer to this issue is electric vehicles. Tesla’s ($TSLA) CEO Elon Musk announced he’s working on a “Master Plan 3”. “Master Plan” (1) was written in 2006 and outlined a plan to make EVs cool with the launch of the $100K+ Model S and X vehicles. “Master Plan Part Deux” was written in 2016 and led to creating the mid-tier Model 3 and Y that sell for closer to $35K (Elon the Troll = S3XY) . Many are speculating that “Master Plan 3” means even cheaper vehicles and a focus on batteries and innovation to accelerate our move off of gas-powered cars. $TSLA stock finished up more than 13% for the week around $900/share.
3.) “The Cypher” — Crypto Investing
Bitcoin ($BTC) and the cryptocurrency market are increasingly correlated with the broader stock market. $BTC finished the week around $42K, which is its highest point recently. The landmark cryptocurrency moved along with U.S. stocks as the Fed increased rates but investors remain bullish. In sh*tcoin news, the new hotness is ApeCoin. Announced by the members of the NFT ‘Bored Ape Yacht Club’, the new crypto is fungible (meaning one coin is worth the same as other Ape coins) and traded on the Ethereum blockchain. One $APE is currently worth $14 and there’s only 1 billion in circulation.
4.) “Straight Cash” — Sports Betting
It’s hard to write about March Madness (Go St. Peter’s Peacocks!) as much is in flux, so we’ll focus on pre-season Major League Baseball. Rob Manfred may be the worst commissioner in professional sports but there will be a season after all. You can now get your MVP future picks before the season starts. Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout lead the pack at +450 with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. close behind at +650. L will throw a tiny bet on the newest Los Angeles Dodger Freddie Freeman at +1800.
5.) “The Alternatives” — The Latest in NFTs
Instagram is preparing to get you to buy NFTs on the platform. Last week Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the social media company will support non-fungible tokens at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Some are speculating that Instagram will allow users to monetize their pages by creating them as NFTs. This would completely disrupt OpenSea, a billion dollar startup that currently monopolizes the market using the Ethereum blockchain. Meta may look to a cheaper blockchain with less fees to gain users. Mike Dickens, COO of Blockasset.co says Solana, with its Phantom wallet, currently offers one of the better NFT purchasing options for Instagram users. As a Solana bag holder we are not, NOT rooting for that. Have a great week, Gainers!
